Södra Cell Tofte is a pulp mill located in Tofte, Norway which as of July 2013 is set to be closed. The plant has been owned by Södra Skogsägarna since 2000 when it bought the plant from Norske Skog.〔Lars Johnsen (19 February 2013): (Sødra Cell Tofte til salgs ) ''Drammens Tidende'', retrieved 2 July 2013〕 The raw material used at the plant is from eucalyptus, pine and spruce. The plant received about 25% of all Norwegian timber.〔 The product is pulp which is used for fine paper. Annual production is 400,000 tonnes, of which 70% is exported. The plant dates back to 1899 when Tofte Cellulosefabrikk was founded. It was called Norske Skog Tofte while owned by Norske Skog. On March 20, 2013, it was announced that the plant which has 295 employees will be shut down on May 1, 2013 due to lack of profit.〔(Cellulose firm to be shut down ) News in English, March 20, 2013〕 In May, it was announced that the production would continue to August. On 1 July 2013 it was announced that the decision to close the plant was definite after several attempts to sell it had failed.〔NTB (1 July 2013): (Södra Cell Tofte legges ned ) ''Dagbladet'', retrieved 2 July 2013〕 The Norwegian forest industry,〔 labour unions and several politicians had argued for the importance of continuing production at Södra Cell Tofte, as they worried a close would harm the total Norwegian forest industry.〔Editorial (2 July 2013): (Trist dag for norsk industri ) ''Dagbladet'', retrieved 2 July 2013〕 ==References==
